Renee the Tiger at Lion Brand Yarn Studio

What a treat I have for you today… In honor of my most recent blog subscriber, I want to share one of my favorite shops in the city which is currently and divinely displaying an art piece titled “Renee”…

Lion Brand Yarn Studio is a regular occurrence in my NYC lifestyle… Not only is the studio beautiful, warm, and inviting to visit – they offer quality products, classes, events/gatherings, and can provide a new perspective on how yarn can be artistic in its own rights…

When I was a young girl, around age 7, my “great” aunt taught me how to crochet… And as I emphasized “great aunt” who’s projects included blankies, doilies, toilet tissue covers, etc – I had grown up with the impression that crocheting and knitting and anything close to the like were for elder folk (sorry auntie)… Not anymore thanks to Lion Brand Yarn Studio… After visiting the shop on several occasions, I discovered a wide range of fellow crochet-er’s and knitters from my early ages all the way to my great aunt :) … And, with this studio featuring yarn artists and their works of art – it has made me say to myself more than once, “I didn’t know yarn can do that!” …

With that said – The current featured artist is Ruth Marshall.

Ruth Marshall, Australian fiber artist, has become internationally known for her hand knit pelts of exotic animals endangered by the illegal skin trade. Each of her one-of-a-kind textiles represents an individual animal she spends months researching. Her work has been featured in The New York Times,Vogue KnittingNY Daily NewsSurface Magazine, and Craft Activism (2011 Random House), and her creations have been exhibited in museums around the world.

Her first knitted full size tiger “Renee” is being exhibited for a few months at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio. Here is a picture I took of her talent:

Doesn’t that make you think of yarn in a whole new way?!? I mean, how can you not, right?!? … So, to my new blog subscriber – this post’s for you :)

One last thing that I think is worth mentioning… The Lion Brand Yarn Studio is collecting knit and crochet 7″ x 9″ blanket blocks until November 30th to “Warm Up America” – These blocks / patchwork will be made into afghans for those in need.
